Hiraeth Assignment
When we were first assigned this project I wasn't too sure what the term Hiraeth meant. I felt like I knew the concept but never fully understood it until it was explained more. During my travels I was told, “Your home is where your heart is” or “Your home is where you lay your head at night”. But have you ever caught yourself reminiscing about a specific place that you can no longer go back to and sometimes that is all you want? In the Welch culture this is known as a Hiraeth.
Personally for me, one place I miss in particular is the country side of France, which is where I lived for three years. The image that is posted above is of the village I lived in, Rosieres-sur-Mance. During this time, although the change was hard, I was able to learn a lot about myself while having the luxury of beautiful scenery and a simplistic lifestyle at my fingertips. Knowing what I was going to write about was a toss up at the beginning since there were two places that meant a lot to me but France taught me a lot more about life than Germany. Now that I chosen my topic, I then had the problem of where to get started.
For my first draft, I wrote it with no help and just thought about the memories that meant the most to me. Since this was new to me, finding the right writing style took me some time. I didn't ask anyone for help or didn't discuss this project with anyone as well. I felt that this is my own experience and I need to do this on my own so it is entirely my own story. During the midterm meeting, it was mentioned that I steered more to talking about the place than my own experience. I took that and instantly started thinking about what was the most important thing that happened while I was there. And then the answer was clear. While I was there, I found my passion in life and knew from then on working with animals is what I wanted to do. Once I had a set idea of what exactly I was going to write about, the story became a lot more clear.
On this page, I will post my drafts of my hiraeth assignment. Without giving the story away, to read about my experience chose the link(s) below.
-Draft #1: Viva la France
-Draft #2: C'est la vie
