Film-Based Assignment
John Q. Archibold, (the main character in the film John Q. played by Denzel Washington) a loving husband to wife Denise and father to son Michael, got devastating news that his son would need a heart transplant. Unfortunately, he does not have the health insurance to cover the expenses nor does he have the money to cover the bills. Out of desperation, this courageous father took a leap of faith when he reacted by bringing an unloaded gun into an ER and take hostages. No one was hurt due to his actions. Once his cries for help for his son were heard, the surgery was able to go forward. Along with this feat, John also got the attention of the health care system and now positive changes can start to be made.
This was a very heartfelt story, but there were some things that he may have done that I do not entirely agree with. I wanted to focus on if John is a Hero or Villain. For my first draft, I first wrote about if he was guilty or non guilty. I didn't collaborate with anyone on this project, because I wanted my opinions to be mine and not skewed by anyone else. I tried to argue that he was non-guilty for the main reason that no one was harmed during his stunt. But, I seemed to go off track and on a bit of a tangent and that point I was trying to make didn't come across too clearly.
During the Midterm Review meeting, this was spoken about. I then decided maybe it would be better to choose if John is either a Hero or Villain. But now this turned into a road block for me. I was torn, I felt like he falls into both categories and I can't chose just one side. The second draft took me awhile to gather my thoughts, but I think it is clear where I stand on this topic. Here I will post both my midterm and final assignments for the film-based assignment. To find out what I think, click on the link(s) below.
-Draft #1: Valor
-Draft #2: John Q.: Hero or Villain?
